What is the Preternatural?
The Preternatural is different from the paranormal. Ghosts are considered paranormal, for the reason they at one time walked this Earth in human form. Preternatural entities have not. There are several types of preternatural entities. Just because something hasn’t had human form doesn’t instantly make it evil.
Angels and demons are two types. Demons are defined as “an evil spirit OR devil”. Did you know there’s more than one type of demon? We discuss this claim in the podcast episode “Demonology Part 3: Types of Demons”. Demons are no laughing matter, so investigators need to obtain indisputable proof of a demonic entity.
Elementals are another type. Elementals are basically spiritual manifestations of elements in our world: water, earth, fire and air/wind. These entities are reactive, and their behavior is based on people. They can be dangerous. We discuss these beings in the podcast episode “Elementals”.
There are different types of thoughtforms, which we’ll also discuss here because these entities never had human form. Thoughtforms: Tulpas, Egregors, and Poltergeists are manifestations of our mind. Given enough thought, these beings can also interact with the world and can eventually take on a life of their own, acting outside the will of the creator. The most common type of demon is a Created: an Egregor.
Different types of Egregors can include Tricksters, which are considered ‘evil manifestations’ that interact with the world. These beings often misplace a person’s items. Another type is called a Creeper. These beings can be categorized as demonic, and often crawl around their environment, be it on the ground, crawling on the walls, and can even crawl on the ceiling. These are just two we have confirmed to have encountered at some point in an investigation.
